Electricity (from the New Latin ēlectricus, "amber-like") is a general term that encompasses a variety of phenomena resulting from the presence and flow of electric charge. These include many easily recognizable phenomena, such as lightning and static electricity, but in addition, less familiar concepts, such as the electromagnetic field and electromagnetic induction. In general usage, the word "electricity" is adequate to refer to a number of physical effects. In scientific usage, however, the term is vague, and these related, but distinct, concepts are better identified by more precise terms:
Electrical phenomena have been studied since antiquity, though advances in the science were not made until the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Practical applications for electricity however remained few, and it would not be until the late nineteenth century that engineers were able to put it to industrial and residential use. The rapid expansion in electrical technology at this time transformed industry and society. Electricity's extraordinary versatility as a source of energy means it can be put to an almost limitless set of applications which include transport, heating, lighting, communications, and computation. The backbone of modern industrial society is, and for the foreseeable future can be expected to remain, the use of electrical power. Q. I am doing a project on how much really electricity impacts the environment. I'm only asking questions that basically I can't find. I figured another person with another veiw on this would point me in the direction of finding a source for my research. What are various things that you know electricity does to the environment? How much does it affect the environment? How much does turbines and solar panels have to with the damage? Do they cause the majority of the damage? I'm mainly looking for a source regarding how much damage(to the environment)solar panels and turbines make by producing electricity. List your sources to the exact place you found the information. Asked by babbaler - Fri Jul 20 20:01:03 2007 - - 2 Answers - 1 Comments A. The most significant damage to the environment in the production of electricity is the pollution from coal burning power plants. Dark plums of pollution are released into the atmosphere causing acid rain, smog, cancer and even global warming. The next most significant damaging electrical production process is actually hydro-electric dams. Although the production of electricity from these damns are pollution free, the fact that they stop the flow of water is what causes the most damage. This creates stagnant water with rotting leaves and debree which break down and create methane gasses. Not to mention the ecological disasters that happen down stream from lack of sediment and nutriants. When you put a switch on does electricity start flowing through the socket? or is it that when you plug in something that electricity flows? How does it affect my electricity bills? Asked by sanket - Thu Aug 16 03:42:31 2007 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments A. Think of electricity like water. Voltage is like the head pressure of a tank placed up high. Current is like the flow. The electric company charge for the actual amount of power (volume). Without a load connected to your socket, no current will flow and no change will occur to your meter. The switch is a safety device so that you don't make or break the load with the plug. Much of the 3rd world doesn't have a switch on their sockets (receptacles) Answered by Poor one - Thu Aug 16 10:28:20 2007 My caravan fridge is not cooling on electricity but is very cold on gas. What is the problem?
Q. The fridge is old and the temperature of the fridge on electricity does not get cold enough but on gas it can freeze things in the fridge if turned to maximum. Why is the fridge not working on electricity but only on gas? I want to only run it on electricity. The wiring is fine and yes it is plugged in. I plugged the electricity into the caravan and into the garage. All other lights and everything work. Thanks for the helpful remarks and will start to work on it tomorrow.
